JLT drivers take class wins on Colin McRae Stages |
John Lloyd co-driven by Adrian Cavenagh driving a Subaru WRC and Jimmy McRae co-driven by Pauline Gullick driving a Porsche 911 both finished fifth overall and won their class respectively in the National B and National A sections of the Colin McRae Stages Rally which was based in Aberfeldy on Saturday 1st October.
The Scottish weather changed on Friday evening with a heavy rain storm and when crews arrived at the Service Area on Saturday morning they were met by local farmers who had brought their tractors to help tow the stranded vehicles from the field. With further heavy rain conditions deteriorated during the day, the stages were wet and muddy. Driving was made even more hazardous by the low mist and it was difficult seeing the road ahead of you on the forest tracks. The scenes in the Service Area were likened to Glastonbury.
Jimmy McRae who was struggling with the Porsche in the treacherous conditions dropped his tyre pressures in an attempt to find some traction. It worked as the Scot shot through to take the lead on Errochty and went on to clinch the Category 3 section of the Historic Rally Championship.
Team mates Andrew Barnes and Guy Simmons driving the second Tuthill Porsche 911 finished second in class behind McRae. The event was won by Stig Blomqvist and Ana Goni driving a Viking Motorsport Ford Escort. The Colin McRae Stages Rally was the final round of the Historic Rally Championship. David Stokes and Guy Weaver in their Ford Escort backed off for the final stage finishing third overall as they were determined to win the championship for the third time.
John Lloyd and Adrian Cavenagh will be in action again on the Tempest Rally based in Rushmoor Arena, Aldershot on Saturday 5th November. They will be hoping to repeat their win of last year driving Julian Reynolds Subaru Impreza WRC.
